Check an evidence record
Choose the folder holding your photographs and its spec.json. This page re-computes
the SHA-256 of every file and compares it with what the record says it should be.
What this checks: that every file is byte-for-byte what the
spec.json beside it says. It cannot tell whether that spec.json is the
original: whoever holds the folder could replace a photograph and write a new
spec.json to match. So the page shows the record's own fingerprint -- compare it with
a copy kept somewhere else, and a match means neither the record nor any file has changed.
What it cannot check: whether the photographs show what they say they show,
or when they were taken. A digest proves the bytes have not changed; it says nothing about what
is in the picture.
This file is self-contained. Keep a copy beside your evidence — it will still work with no
internet connection, and it does not depend on any website continuing to exist.
