Read an evidence pack

Checks the files against what the record says about them, here in this browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is sent anywhere.

Why it asks you to choose the folder. This page is a single file and may be sitting inside the pack already — but a page opened from a folder on your own computer is not allowed to read the files beside it. That is a rule in the browser, not a choice made here. Choosing the folder is what grants it permission to read, and only to read.

What this page does not do

It does not check any signature. A pack may contain a timestamp from an authority independent of us. This page does not verify that signature, does not check the certificate behind it, and cannot tell whether it was withdrawn. Doing that properly needs a list of trusted authorities that would have to be correct decades from now, and a page that carried its own list could be handed a forged token and print a reassuring answer.

It also cannot tell you what a photograph shows, or that a camera was pointed at any particular place. A record proves which files it holds and that they have not changed. Judging what is in them is a person's job.
